Types of fall protection Vertical lifelines are part of fall protection systems that bear heavy loads and do not snap easily when attached to the individual. There are self-retracting vertical lifelines which pull back the individual from fall. The ropes used in vertical lifelines are called webbing and they fall under OSHA guidelines. Anchorage is another fall protection system which can be used as a personal fall arrest system while bearing up to 5000 pounds of weight. However, take precautions in advance to stop the individual from becoming the target of a fall hazard. Limit the weight of the arresting force even if the fall protection system can hold more weight. Rig the fall protection systems so that no employee can fall below 6 feet or touch any surface lower than that during a fall. The systems which have been recently used in fall protection accident should be removed from use. They can be used only after a competent officer checks their functionality and declare them as undamaged. Keep in mind that no fall arrest system or protection system should be attached to guard railing. Look out for poor workplace design, lack of access support or collapse of the building restraint or hooks. Make sure to use fall arrest systems while working at high altitudes.
